How to Measure for Wide Fit Shoes
Most wide-shoe mistakes happen before the retailer page. People size up for width, ignore instep volume, or compare a regular shoe to a 2E or 4E shoe without measuring the part of the foot that is actually tight.
The 10-minute at-home workflow
Measure late in the day, stand with normal weight on both feet, and wear the socks you expect to use with the shoes. Trace each foot on paper, mark heel-to-longest-toe length, then measure the widest part of the ball of the foot. Use a soft tape around the ball, around the instep, and across the heel. Write down both feet and use the larger measurements.

What 2E, 4E, and 6E usually mean

When not to size up
If your toes have extra length but the side of the forefoot feels squeezed, sizing up may create heel slip without solving the real width issue. Try a wide-width version first, then adjust length only if the toe clearance is also short.
